Field note
Budget narratives that survive a second glance
Award panels often include at least one person who reads the budget before the inspiration. A fieldwork story that depends on three site visits will not survive a travel line that funds one.
We advise applicants to write the budget justification in the same sitting as the impact paragraph. If a cost appears, a sentence in the narrative should make that cost feel inevitable rather than ornamental.
During Scholarship & Grant File Reviews, mismatches of this kind outnumber eloquence problems. Fix the arithmetic story first; the prose usually settles afterward.
